All Ablaze

The oversized blazer was all over the runways for Spring 2009, and has maintained its staple status in every girls wardrobe ever since. Alexander Wang and Stella McCartney showed a slouchy double-breasted look whilst Marc Jacobs opted for a three button single-breasted blazer. My faves can be seen on the likes of Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Lara Bingle and Jen Hawkins. This may seem like a hard trend to pull off for some, but if done right anyone can wear this look effortlessly.
For an exy designer piece, I'd recommend YSL, Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney or Balmain. In having said that, this look doesn't have to cost as much as your rent. Blazers from Zara all over Europe seemed to be my commonly justified purchases, AND for a reasonable price. Finding a great oversized blazer at an op-shop or market, or even your boyfriends wardrobe is also a great option. The rule is to look for potential not perfection. Colour is the first approach to this trend. Sherbet hues have been seen to be very popular on the runways. Trying this trend in real life needs to be taken with a grain of salt, or you may end up looking like a Golden Girl. This year brights and block colours are the way to go. Make sure there are modern touches to the blazer to remain fashion forward. If a timeless look is more you, go for classic neutrals. Can't go wrong with choosing nude, cream or classic black.
An oversized blazer doesn't mean it shouldn't 'fit'. It's important it should fit across your shoulders. The oversized qualities should be in the length, for an almost tunic fit. And in sleeves, so there is plenty of fabric for rolling sleeves up, scrunching, etc. Changing the buttons, removing the sleeves, or adding/removing shoulder pads are great ways to make an okay item into something wonderful, you may just need to find a good tailor to assist in this process.
Finding balance when wearing something oversized isn't difficult, but here are some tips. Pair your bottom half with a fitted piece. Throw on a t-shirt, leggings, and heels and call it a day. Or wear your favorite skinny jeans. For an evening look, a tight mini dress or slinky t-shirt dress would work....luv xx
